Hydroponics in particular is a specific method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions in water without soil.
Plants can be grown with their roots in the mineral nutrient or in a medium like perlite, gravel, mineral wool or coconut husk. The mineral nutrients are absorbed as inorganic ions in water. When introduced artificially into the plants water supply, it removes the need for soil.
